An epicanthoplasty is a procedure done to alter the horizontal width of the eye. This is performed through small incisions and clever local tissue rearrangement to hide scars and give the canthal region a natural appearance.
A medial epicanthoplasty can also be used to alter the inner part of the eyelid fold, creating an out-fold (fold above the upper lid margin) appearance. A lateral epicanthoplasty may also involve lengthening of the lateral part of the eye by anchoring the canthal tendon to the bone. Epicanthoplasties are often performed concurrent to incisional upper blepharoplasty procedures.
