Alarplasty is a procedure done to reduce the width of the alar bases, making for less prominent nostrils. The ideal alar base width should be about a fifth of the face when the face is divided vertically, or the distance between both medial canthi. Alarplasty can be performed via internal as well as external incisions. Internal incisions allow for hidden scars but lead to less significant alar base narrowing. External incisions, if sutured well, often heal without prominent scar after a few months and is used for more significant narrowing. Your surgeon will assess your nasal alar and decide on the best approach for you.
