‘Ageing gracefully.’

How many times have we heard that phrase being used to describe accepting the ravages time places on our appearance? It is indeed important to age gracefully, both inside and out. Keeping happy and healthy in life helps tremendously in this process and should form the basis of ‘ageing gracefully’. For those desiring a little more, the advancements in aesthetic procedures have allowed for the reversing of ageing in the most natural way possible. Whilst the gold standard to achieve this continues to be the surgical facelift, this requires more of a commitment as well as time to heal. For those who are not ready for surgery, thankfully, there are many minimally invasive techniques that can help, especially if used in combination. FaceTite from InMode is one of the latest advanced technologies to bridge this gap.

What is FaceTite?

FaceTite utilizes precise radiofrequency (RF) technology to heat the skin and fat of the face and neck, utilizing controlled thermal 'damage’ to its benefit. It does this through the use of a specially designed handpiece with an internal probe and external sensor. The handpiece allows for bipolar radiofrequency energy to be sent through the fat and skin of the face and neck, ensuring that the energy is concentrated only in the treatment zone to maximize the melting of fat and contraction of the fibrous septae and skin, therefore also earning the moniker RFAL (radiofrequency assisted liposuction).

The overall remodelling effect continues to improve months after the procedure and can last for years.

In addition, the system has built-in safety mechanisms to limit the internal and external temperatures, minimizing the risk of burns (a risk previous radiofrequency devices were known for). Through skilful application of energy and depth, the surgeon can use the FaceTite handpiece like a minimally invasive surgical scalpel, removing fat from areas of excess and contracting the fibrous septal network (FSN) of areas where skin laxity is the main feature.

FaceTite can be combined with its sister RF technologies, such as AccuTite and Morpheus 8, with liposuction to really help remove excess fat, or other minimally invasive procedures such as threadlifts to give a more significant, lasting result.

Who would benefit most from FaceTite?

FaceTite is suitable for individuals with early to moderate features of facial ageing, and with excess subcutaneous fat at the neck. It is particularly effective for those with sagging skin and/or excess fat on the lower face and neck.

The effects of the technology are 2 fold:

  • tightening as well as fat reduction,
  • the advantage of being repeatable with incremental effects.

It should be noted that at later stages of facial ageing, FaceTite can still be performed, but may require combination with other therapies as well as repeated treatments to achieve a significant result.

What should I expect from the FaceTite procedure?

Your plastic surgeon should first conduct a comprehensive consultation to elicit your desires and expectations, as well as rule out any contraindications to the procedure, such as skin conditions or allergies. The potential benefits as well as the risks of the procedure should be explained as well.

The majority of FaceTite procedures can be performed under local anaesthesia. This involves the infiltration of numbing solution under the skin in the area to be treated using small needles, which cause minimal pain. The sensation is one of tingling for about 5-10 seconds, before the numbness ensues. Once you are comfortable, FaceTite then proceeds through needle stab incisions, usually located under the chin and behind the ears. These invariably heal imperceptibly. Sedation is available upon patient request, and does require fasting for at least 6 hours beforehand. The procedure takes about 25-30min for the whole of the lower face and neck, with some gentle turning of the neck required from the patient. Overall, the procedure is very comfortable, and patients experience minimal discomfort.

Complications of the FaceTite procedure are rare. However, these include the small risk of skin burns from the tip of the probe, or temporary facial nerve injury from the heat and/or the anaesthesia, which can result in temporary facial paralysis. This almost always heals completely within a couple of weeks.

After the FaceTite procedure

Post-procedure, patients can expect some swelling in the lower face and neck, along with mild bruising. Pain can be present, but usually lasts 1-2 days and is well controlled with simple painkillers. A pressure garment is provided to aid with reduction in swelling as well as skin retraction, and it is advisable to wear it as much as possible for the first 2 weeks. By the end of the first 2 weeks, about 80% of the swelling will have dissipated, and any bruising would have resolved. It is at this point where you will notice a difference in the outline of the treatment areas. The scars will be imperceptible by this point, and most individuals are back to work and exercise.

The benefits of FaceTite RFAL will continue to take effect 1-2 months after the procedure, as the tissues and skin continue to remodel and produce collagen. You will notice a tighter skin texture, reduced jowls and nasolabial folds, and a more refined jawline. Areas treated for excess fat, such as the cheeks or under the chin, will appear less full. The effects of the FaceTite procedure can last a year or more. If more significant tightening or fat reduction is desired, it can be repeated 1-2 months after the initial procedure.

What are the benefits of choosing FaceTite?

FaceTite is the latest in minimally invasive facial rejuvenation, and is associated with almost no incisions, scarring, downtime or risk. The ability to deliver precise bipolar RF energy at controlled depths is second to none, and in the trained hands of a specialist, it is the next best thing to a surgical scalpel for simultaneous fat reduction and skin tightening. Other minimally invasive rejuvenation procedures, such as lasers or ultrasound-based energies, are not as targeted nor address the host of ageing issues that FaceTite does. And compared to surgical facelifts, there are no scars. It is truly the bridge that we have been missing in our armamentarium.
