Aesthetic Procedures: Minimally Invasive Procedures & Skin Care

Face Fillers

Fillers refers to the range of natural or manufactured materials available to volumize the face and body. The most common natural filler available is fat (see fat grafting procedures) whilst the most common manufactured fillers are based on hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is a substance found in many tissues of our body, and in addition to filling by its volume, also attracts water to the surrounding area to further enhance its effect. HA fillers are now used to reverse facial ageing, enhance normal appearance, and even treat sunken scars.

How do fillers work and what are the potential complications?

Efforts by dermatologists and plastic surgeons to educate and standardize filler injections to improve patient safety have led to the development of various guidelines which are targeted at avoiding known filler complications, including intravascular injection, skin necrosis and blindness. At the same time, filler technology has led to more options in the consistency (G’) and strength of fillers, with the use depending on the depth at which the filler is injected. In general, those with higher cross-linked HA have a higher G’, and should be used for deeper injection, while those with a less firm consistency can be used for more superficial injections. An added advantage of HA fillers is the ability to reverse their effects using hyaluronidase, in cases of asymmetry or emergencies.

At Polaris Plastic Surgery, we use the entire range of advanced HA fillers, which allow finesse and refinement in minimally invasive facial rejuvenation. A session with our board-certified plastic surgeon will enable you to achieve your desires with optimum safety.
