If your nipple can be spared during surgery, the shape and form of the nipple and areola is usually retained. However, if the nipple cannot be kept, usually due to tumour characteristics, nipple and areola reconstruction can be performed once the initial reconstruction has fully healed and any adjunct treatments are completed, anytime from 3 months after the initial reconstruction. The nipple is usually reconstructed using techniques akin to the makeup of the tissue at the new nipple site, or by nipple-sharing from the contralateral breast. The areola is usually tattooed after the nipple reconstruction. In some instances, 3D nipple and areola tattooing can be chosen and can give visually nice results.
